Does anyone know what type of handheld GPS would be good for this & where to get one from. I had a look on trademe but they seemed overly expensive.

The higher resolution GPS the better. For a good-but-basic non-"roads only" one, you'll be paying around $400 - $500: One designed for hiking is usually a good choice.
